You don't need solar panels to have backup. The system works on its own, and it can also integrate with panels or a generator.

**We recommend LiFePO4** for its greater usable energy, efficiency, and lifespan. Lead-acid can still be a good fit for existing systems or infrequent backup applications.

An honest assessment

## When it makes sense to add batteries

Not always. Take this honest look:

**It's worth it if:**

-   Your area has frequent power outages (more than 5-6 a year, or long ones).
-   You have critical equipment (cold rooms, medical equipment, servers).
-   Your business/industry is on an industrial rate with a demand charge.
-   You have a solar system and want to use the excess generation at night (greater independence).

**It's less worth it if:**

-   The power supply in your area is very stable.
-   Your critical loads are low.
-   You don't want to add cost to the solar system and your priority is a short payback.
